MANILA, Philippines – Oscar de la Hoya may be the most successful fighter-turned-promoter in the history of boxing.
Is Manny Pacquiao looking to follow in his footsteps?
The world lightweight champion will launch his first promotional gig in the US with rising Filipino star Bernabe Concepcion fighting in the 10-round main billing.
The card is a joint venture between Manny Pacquiao Promotions and California-based Sycuan Ringside Promotions which will be held on September 25 at the Sycuan Resort in San Diego.
“[We are] extremely excited to be partnering with Manny in his first boxing promotion,” Sycuan Promotions vice-president Scott Woodworth said.
Concepcion takes on Giovanni Caro in a super-bantamweight clash, the top card in a battle between fighters from the Philippines and Mexico.
Concepcion, 20, has a 26-1-1 win-loss-draw record, while Caro carries a decent 11-4-4.
Other Filipinos in the card include junior-welterweight Dennis Laurente (29-3 win-loss) and lightweight Aaron Melgarejo (11-6-1).
Pacquiao, who will face de la Hoya on December 6, has taken on a road similar to de la Hoya’s. They are both pound-for-pound champions. They are crowd drawers. And they both even have recording albums.
Judging by Sycuan Promotions’ first impression, Pacquiao could find success as a fight promoter.
“Dealing with Manny and his organization has been a real honor,” Sycuan Promotions vice-president Willie Tucker said. “He is a class act. We… have thousands of Filipino-American customers in Southern California and we’re expecting ticket demand to be extremely high for this event.” – GMANews.TV
